The anti-inflammatory role of placental Hofbauer cells is altered in patients with chorioamnionitis: Are CYP2C8 and soluble epoxide hydrolase involved in immunomodulation?
Zdenek Tauber, Katerina Cizkova
Biomed Pap Med Fac Univ Palacky Olomouc Czech Repub. 2022, 166(3):267-273 | DOI: 10.5507/bp.2021.026
The authors show that the expression profile of IL-1β, IL-10, CYP2C8 and sEH in Hofbauer cells in chorioamnionitis differs from normal placenta, suggesting alteration in the anti-inflammatory role of HBCs and their regulation in chorioamnionitis.

Cheng-Cheng Hwang, Tsan-Yu Hsieh, Kun-Yang Yeh, Tzu-Ping Chen, Chung-Ching Hua, Liang-Che Chang, Jim-Ray Chen
Biomed Pap Med Fac Univ Palacky Olomouc Czech Repub. 2022, 166(3):274-279 | DOI: 10.5507/bp.2022.007
EGFR L858R point mutation in exon 21 was identified in two patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC). No concurrent EGFR gene amplification was found. This suggests a particular EGFR mutation in SCLC in the Taiwanese area.

Ampullary duodenal/intestinal adenocarcinomas (ADAC) are smaller than non-ampullary forms (NADAC), with a higher rate of lymph node metastases, but with a better prognosis and longer-term outcome in the described cohort. Oral location of non-ampullary forms is associated with worse OS. Perineural invasion and postoperative oncological therapy were significant prognostic factors for OS in the ADAC, but the total number of lymph nodes and lymph node ratio were most significant for disease free survival in the NADAC patients. To our knowledge, this is the only retrospective observational cohort study on duodenal adenocarcinomas in the Czech Republic and probably Central Europe.
Predictive value of tissue calprotectin for disease recurrence after ileocecal resection in pediatric Crohn's disease
Kristyna Zarubova, Ondrej Fabian, Ondrej Hradsky, Tereza Lerchova, Filip Mikus, Vojtech Dotlacil, Lucie Pos, Richard Skaba, Jiri Bronsky
Biomed Pap Med Fac Univ Palacky Olomouc Czech Repub. 2022, 166(3):297-303 | DOI: 10.5507/bp.2021.050
This study aimed to determine whether detection of calprotectin in resection margins is useful as a marker for relapse of Crohn's disease. While this was not confirmed, we found other interesting laboratory/ histological markers.
Associations between neurofilament light chain levels, disease activity and brain atrophy in progressive multiple sclerosis

Biomed Pap Med Fac Univ Palacky Olomouc Czech Repub. 2022, 166(3):304-311 | DOI: 10.5507/bp.2021.034
The results show that the neurofilament light chain (NfL) is related to disease activity in progressive multiple sclerosis. The plasma neurofilament light chain (pNfL) has the potential to discriminate patients with three-domain NEDA (No evident disease activity) status and pathological brain volume loss. pNfL appears to be a useful supportive biomarker in making a treatment decision in progressive multiple sclerosis. We can recommend to clinicians including pNfL evaluation at patient regular annual monitoring as an auxiliary tool to the results of clinical and radiological follow-up.
The prognosis and therapeutic management of patients hospitalized for heart failure in 2010-2020
Otto Mayer Jr, Jan Bruthans, Simona Bilkova, Jitka Seidlerova, Josef Jirak, Jan Filipovsky
Biomed Pap Med Fac Univ Palacky Olomouc Czech Repub. 2022, 166(3):312-321 | DOI: 10.5507/bp.2022.020
The analysis represents a prospective follow-up study of ≈4100 patients hospitalized for heart failure. The authors analyzed the mortality, recommended pharmacotherapy, and other factors that affected prognosis in these very high-risk patients. Despite all the progress that has been made in cardiovascular medicine in the last two decades, the prognosis of patients with heart failure is highly unfavorable and almost a third die within one year. Moreover, the management of patients with advanced heart failure is far from optimal.
Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin-II-receptor antagonists and angiotensin-receptor blocker/neprilysin inhibitor utilization in heart failure patients: Sub-analysis of a nation-wide population-based study in the Czech Republic
Renata Aiglova, Milos Taborsky, Marie Lazarova, Ludek Pavlu, Josef Danek, Jan Precek, Alexander Schee, Vit Gloger, Vlastimil Cernicek, Marek Vicha, Tomas Skala
Biomed Pap Med Fac Univ Palacky Olomouc Czech Repub. 2022, 166(3):322-327 | DOI: 10.5507/bp.2021.035
Comparable rate of drug prescription in comparison with specific heart failure registries was found in an analysis of ACEIs, ARBs and ARNIs use in all patients treated for heart failure in the Czech Republic in recent years. Ramipril and perindopril remain the most prescribed ACEIs. Telmisartan has become the most prescribed ARB. Since 2018, ARNIs have been widely prescribed.
Elasticity of neck muscles in cervicogenic headache
Zuzana Sedlackova, Martin Vita, Jan Herman, Tomas Furst, Tomas Dornak, Miroslav Herman
Biomed Pap Med Fac Univ Palacky Olomouc Czech Repub. 2022, 166(3):328-333 | DOI: 10.5507/bp.2021.030
Patients with cervicogenic headache had a higher stiffness of the sternocleidomastoid muscle than healthy volunteers. The stiffness of the trapezius muscle did not differ. Elastography could be used as a diagnostic tool in cervicogenic headache.

Biomed Pap Med Fac Univ Palacky Olomouc Czech Repub. 2022, 166(3):334-342 | DOI: 10.5507/bp.2021.025
In case of severe hallux valgus deformity, we choose a two-level arthrodesis to correct the axis of the entire first ray of the foot. For fixation of the arthrodesis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint we usually use an LCP plate. This biomechanical test of cadaveric specimens, compares 2 methods of fixation of modified Lapidus arthrodesis, two BOLD screws or LCP X plate.

Hearing improvement after vestibular schwannoma surgery in the era of the hearing preservation rule - case report and literature review
Zdenek Fik, Jan Lazak, Silvie Hruba, Zdenek Cada, Eduard Zverrna, Jan Betka
Biomed Pap Med Fac Univ Palacky Olomouc Czech Repub. 2022, 166(3):347-352 | DOI: 10.5507/bp.2021.067
If hearing preservation in vestibular schwannoma surgery is still an uncertain outcome, then achieving postoperative hearing improvement is quite rare. The presented case report describes an improvement in hearing after vestibular schwannoma surgery and discusses the prognostic factors for achieving this result.
