In this article, observational data on pregnancy outcomes, neonatal course, growth trajectory and 3-year follow-up in two children born at our institution in 2019 to mothers after uterus transplantation were analyzed, including assessment of neurodevelopment using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, third edition (Bayley-III). No abnormalities were observed in either prematurely born babies in terms of the neonatal course and 3-year follow-up, including the neurodevelopmental status. This is the first ever report on neurodevelopmental outcomes in children born after uterus transplantation. |
Comparison of two modes of long-term ECG monitoring to assess the efficacy of catheter ablation for paroxysmal atrial fibrillationJan Chovancik, Veronika Bulkova, Dan Wichterle, Ondrej Toman, Lukas Rybka, Jaroslav Januska, Jindrich Spinar, Martin FialaBiomed Pap Med Fac Univ Palacky Olomouc Czech Repub. 2019, 163(1):54-60 | DOI: 10.5507/bp.2018.031 Rationalized cost-effective ECG monitoring that properly assesses the outcome of catheter ablation for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation remains challenging. By comparing two modes of episodic ECG monitoring during 12-month post-ablation follow-up, daily discontinuous ECG recording was found to be superior in detecting recurrent atrial fibrillation compared to continuous episodic ECG monitoring applied twice for around 1 week. Entirely asymptomatic patients with recurrent arrhythmias at risk of misinterpretation of ablation outcome and false decision on further anticoagulation management were rare. |

Various studies analyse different polymorphisms and their association with periodontitis, but conflicting results regarding the disease relation to IL-8 polymorphisms are being apprised. In this paper, the focus is on the genetic aspect of periodontitis. |
The use of sentinel skin islands for monitoring buried and semi-buried micro-vascular flaps. Part I: Summary and brief description of monitoring methodsMartin Molitor, Ondrej Mestak, Richard Pink, Ren Foltn, Andrej Sukop, Stefano LucchinaBiomed Pap Med Fac Univ Palacky Olomouc Czech Repub. 2021, 165(2):113-130 | DOI: 10.5507/bp.2021.016 Over 40 monitoring methods of micro-vascular flaps have been reported in the scientific literature and it is difficult to discern the benefits of these over other methods or over direct visual monitoring, the standard method. In this review, we collated all reported monitoring methods to date and critically assessed their value including for practical use. We found that direct visual monitoring remains the most used, is very reliable and cheapest method for micro-vascular flap assessment. Only Doppler ultrasound, laser Doppler flowmetry and near infrared spectroscopy show any evidence of greater value but they require special equipment, experienced personnel and are more expensive. |

Arterial stiffness in aortic stenosis - complex clinical and prognostic implicationsAdriana Albu, Ioana Para, Cristina BidianBiomed Pap Med Fac Univ Palacky Olomouc Czech Repub. 2022, 166(4):369-379 | DOI: 10.5507/bp.2022.040 Arterial stiffness and aortic stenosis share similar cardiovascular risk factors and they are frequently associated, leading to increased left ventricular afterload. Even though accurate estimation of arterial stiffness in AoS is challenging, the coexistence of an increased pulsatile load may influence patient outcome before as well as after aortic valve replacement. |
Effect of sertraline in paroxysmal hypertensionJan Vaclavik, Aneta Krenkova, Eva Kocianova, Tomas Vaclavik, Monika KamasovaBiomed Pap Med Fac Univ Palacky Olomouc Czech Repub. 2018, 162(2):116-120 | DOI: 10.5507/bp.2017.039 The optimal treatment for paroxysmal hypertension or pseudopheochromocytoma has not been established. We added sertraline, 50 mg once daily, to the current medication of 64 patients with symptomatic paroxysmal hypertension. Within 3 months of treatment, sertraline effectively removed or reduced symptoms of paroxysmal hypertension in the majority (75%) of patients. Symptoms of paroxysmal hypertension fully subsided in 50% and were partially reduced in 25% of patients. |
The efficacy of a non-leaching antibacterial central venous catheter - a prospective, randomized, double-blind studyIvo Krikava, Martin Kolar, Barbora Garajova, Tomas Balik, Alena Sevcikova, Ingolf Roschke, Pavel SevcikBiomed Pap Med Fac Univ Palacky Olomouc Czech Repub. 2020, 164(2):154-160 | DOI: 10.5507/bp.2019.022 A prospective, randomized, double-blinded and controlled study compared non-leaching central venous catheter (Certofix® protect) with a standard catheter (Certofix®). There was no difference for catheter colonization rates between the coated and uncoated catheter. However, the coated central venous catheter showed a significantly lower incidence of bloodstream infections and a significantly lower mean incidence of bloodstream infections per 1000 catheter days. |
The use of sentinel skin islands for monitoring buried and semi-buried micro-vascular flaps. Part II: Clinical applicationMartin Molitor, Ondrej Mestak, Richard Pink, Rene Foltan, Andrej Sukop, Stefano LucchinaBiomed Pap Med Fac Univ Palacky Olomouc Czech Repub. 2021, 165(2):131-138 | DOI: 10.5507/bp.2021.017 Direct visual monitoring of micro-vascular flaps is still generally and preferentially used. In cases where the flap is not exposed - buried or semi-buried flap, direct visual monitoring is not straightforward. However, apart from a few exceptions, each micro-surgical flap can be designed as a composite which includes a skin island that can serve as a direct monitor of flap viability. This review describes all the published techniques for externalising part of a buried flap. It also defines which tissues are suitable to be used as an externalised component of the flap and summarises the principles that need to be observed to achieve the greatest reliability and validity of the externalised flap's segment monitoring. |
