PREFACE

This Congress is organized at a time in which the focus is on new technologies and the use and implementation of new developments in pathology, such as DNA microarrays, comparative genomic hybridization, confocal microscopy, laser microdissection, computer image analysis, etc. are increasing. Immunohistochemical techniques have become essential for up-to-date diagnostic pathology and are used widely in daily practice. The main Congress topics reflect this trend and include both the diagnostic and prognostic/predictive significance of these examinations with respect to the possible role of the pathologist as an active participant in the formation of individualised therapy for patients with neoplastic, genetic-related, and/or infectious diseases. We hope that this Congress will make it possible to build bridges between classical morphologically oriented pathology and new diagnostic tools and technologies.

Zdeněk Kolář, M.D., Ph.D.

Professor of Pathology
