The presence of gasping at the time of EMS arrival on the scene is associated with improved chance of return of spontaneous circulation and six-month survival. The latter is a new finding. EMS dispatchers and the EMS ambulance teams should recognize and understand this phenomenon as it can have impact on medical care provided to OHCA patients.

The autonomic nevous system can be impaired in the presence of atheroma in the carotid sinus region. The authors assessed the effect of elective unilateral carotid endarterectomy on cardiovascular autonomic functions as a major prognostic factor of cardiovascular health.

Electrical stimulation (ES) of the hyoid muscles for dysphagia is a new therapy which significantly improves swallowing in cases of post-stroke patients with dysphagia. Videofluoroscopy (VFSS) is being used for measuring improvement in swallowing. It is reliable and provides objective evidence that ES of suprahyoid muscles is effective according to the principles of evidence-based medicine.

The authors found that the diaphragm is present in the region of conventional lung monitoring using electrical impedance tomography. During capnoperitoneum, the thoraco-abdominal configuration changes with confounding effects of the diaphragm on the EIT image. This may reduce the use of this method during laparoscopic surgeries. For this reason, the authors assume that for lung monitoring using EIT during capnoperitoneum, the manufacturer's recommendation of electrode belt position are unsuitable.

There has been much recent attention on tumoral lymphangiogenesis. Relevant information on malignant salivary gland tumors is very limited and virtually non existent on benign forms. The presented paper demonstrates that Warthin“s tumor but not other benign salivary adenomas is rich in stromal lymphatics. This difference is due to lymphoid stroma in the former lesion, producing major lymphangiogenic factors.

In Ewing sarcoma, little is known about molecular markers that could be used for prognostic risk stratification at the time of diagnostic biopsy, i.e. prior to treatment. This is the first study to quantify CD163 expression in tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) in Ewing sarcoma. This study found an association between CD163 expression and lower ES stage. The results suggest a possible relationship between markers of TAMs and prognosis of patients with Ewing sarcoma. The authors believe that more detailed information about TAMs could contribute to a better understanding of the biological behavior of this sarcoma.

The authors used a mathematical model to calculate the volume of prolapsed soft tissue of the orbit in blow-out fractures of the orbital floor as an indication criterion for treatment. In cases orbital floorfractures we can identify immediately, post-trauma patients requiring surgical treatment. This method helps us avoid incorrect treatment indications, conservative or surgical.

The authors present a rare case of an 11-year-old female followed after successful treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), who was incidentally diagnosed with inherited Leri-Weill syndrome (LWS) with complete deletion of the SHOX gene. The authors underline the necessity of growth assessment in pediatric hemato-oncologic patients, in whom growth delay is not always a side effect of chemotherapy, but may be caused by an independent concurrent condition. A comprehensive review of the literature is provided.
